Incubus Or Bust

So after a mild obsession with Extreme came Incubus, from funk metal to nu-funk metal if you will.

Redefine

Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E - 1997

The recommendation was local - some older kids had gone to see the band Korn in London supported by the then practically unknown Incubus. From all reports they gave Korn a good run for their money and their major label debut came out soon after (S.C.I.E.N.C.E). I remember going round a friend's house to make a tape copy, they were RAVING about it. When I arrived they had already made the copy and I listened to the first track before going home. That track was 'Redefine', it starts with a didgeridoo - whats not to like ? Goes heavy, then funky, then heavy and then there's a slap bass solo - this ticked all the right boxes for me.

Hilikus

Incubus - Enjoy Incubus - 1997

So working back through the Incubus back catalogue from their major label debut doesn’t take long - 2 self released / small label albums. Much less ‘heavy’ than S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and more funky and odd. There is one song that really stands out to me though - 'Hilikus'. Fun and funky, musically tight. Whats the song about? No idea. Google tells me it's a slang term for insane or crazy - this makes sense.

Stellar

Incubus - Make Yourself - 1999

Their second major label album was Make Yourself. I got a copy of this on the way to Blackpool and remember listening to it a great deal on this short family vacation. We stayed in some grotty B&Bs and watched X-Files - I don’t remember much else. Stand out track on this album is 'Stellar' - HUGE chorus, some super tasty little bass fills to listen out for in the verses as well.

Blood On The Ground

Incubus - Morning View - 2001

Next album - Morning View - recorded in Malibu from a house with the amazing view on the albums front cover. Big seller this album, some singles did pretty well as well. My favourite song from this album ‘Blood on the Ground’ a brilliant opening riff, heavy but melodic, interesting lyrics - sounds to me like betrayal: ‘seeing you is like pulling teeth, and hearing your voice is like chewing tin foil’ glorious.

Oil And Water

Incubus - Light Grenandes - 2006

Final album for this playlist jumps the album A Crow Left of the Murder.. its a pun, geddit? Not my favourite album.. and goes to Light Grenades which is also not a favourite but has this belter of a tune ‘Oil and Water’ covering the differences in relationships. Just think its a consistently clever and smart song, builds brilliantly.
